If you know what a height-adjustable desk means, maybe you’ve heard that they're better for a sitting job, whether you’re at home or in the office. Is that true, and why? Here’s our honest comparison to help you make your own decision for more productive work and better health.
TLDR
- A standing desk gives you flexibility by letting you change its height and move around during your day.
- A traditional desk stands out for its affordability and straightforward design. With no moving parts and absolute silence, it delivers a calm, fuss-free workspace.
- The best desk is the one that fits your lifestyle. Consider what matters most to you and choose the workspace that inspires your best work.

Height adjustment
The main difference with a standing desk is that you can change its height to fit your needs. Even if you don’t want to stand while working, you can set the desk to the best height for sitting so your hips, back, shoulders, and neck stay comfortable. Also, electric desks can save your favourite heights and adjust to them automatically in a few seconds by pressing a button.
A traditional desk, however, has only one fixed height. If it’s too high or too low for you, the only choice is to change your chair. This works for some, but it’s a one-size-fits-all solution that rarely fits anyone perfectly.
And if you have an ergonomic chair, that’s already good for your health, but imagine being able to adjust both the chair and your desk exactly how you want and sit comfortably, as if the furniture was made just for you.
Activity, energy, and focus
Our clients and others online say they felt more active right away. When you raise your desk and stand for a while, you move more because you shift your weight from one leg to the other. Also, when you’re standing, it’s easier to walk to another place or talk to a coworker instead of texting.
By the way, a few months ago we did an experiment to see how many calories our colleagues burned while working standing up. The difference each hour is small, but it adds up to almost 2000 calories in a month if you stand for half the day every day! And if you’re not sure how often to take breaks from your ergonomic desk, our guide can help you decide based on your body needs.
When you use a traditional desk, you usually end up sitting for hours without noticing, as it doesn’t really encourage you to move. If you want to go further, you could try putting a treadmill under your ergonomic desk so you can walk while you work, not just stand. Staying active during the workday can boost your energy and help you focus.
Sound and mechanism
You can see that ergonomic standing desks have many features that help make work more productive and healthier. However, they also have some downsides, like noise and their special mechanism.
Mechanical sit-stand desks are usually loud because you turn the handle yourself, but good electric standing desks are quiet, so they don’t disturb others in the room. This matters a lot for daily use, especially in a home office where different people are doing different things. Here’s what else to know before buying a sit-stand desk.
Regular desks usually don’t have any moving parts, so they don’t make strange noises and don’t need electricity or wires, which is a big advantage.
Price
If you only need a normal desk, there are many classic options available. Prices go from cheap desks at home stores to costly, designer desks made from good materials. If you want to keep to a budget, you’ll definitely find something you like in many stores.
Stand-up desks usually cost more. Although prices vary, you probably won’t find a height-adjustable desk as cheap as a regular desk most of the time if you want a basic model. So, a classic desk usually wins this comparison, unless you plan to buy a fancy one.
But as they say, you get what you pay for. With a cheaper regular desk, you don’t get the features that standing desks have, and here you can see if the electric standing desks are worth it.
Accessories and design
Traditional desks usually have their own style and come with built-in drawers and shelves. Some people like the extra storage, but these features can also make the desk heavy and hard to move.
A Desktronic standing desk usually looks cleaner and simpler, and its frame is design to hold extras: a small drawer under the desk, a monitor stand that matches the tabletop, or a cable tray you choose yourself. This way, you keep the surface tidy and arrange things to fit how you work and how you want it to look. For a tidy, modern, and flexible home-office setup, the standing desk wins this one.
